A sumptuous meal should always be concluded with a delicious dessert. I mean, who does not like having desserts? It is the one thing that parents can use to persuade their kids to finish their vegetables. Sort of like a light at the end of the tunnel. Desserts are usually sweet, but be it a cake or an ice cream, they serve as the perfect ending to a satisfying meal. Or sometimes, they serve as a consolation prize to an unsatisfying meal.
The best ice creams will cost you between $2.75 to $5 per scoop, and a double serving of these will be enough to satisfy your craving. But will you believe that there are some desserts that can cost you a thousand bucks? If that figure is not enough to amaze you, what about a cake that will set you back several millions? With a name like a Valentine Diamond Chocolate Cake, you know that you will be burning your pocket just to get a taste of it.
Here then are the top ten most expensive desserts in the world:
1. Valentine Diamond Chocolate Cake – $5 million
Women would just love to have this cake. Created by a jeweler based in Tokyo in Japan, this dessert has a cluster of 2,000 diamonds on the cake. That is right, 2,000 diamonds. It is hard to ascertain whether to classify it as a dessert or as jewelry. The dark chocolate cake is actually molded to the shape of the African subcontinent. The jeweler claims that it is an expression of his love for the continent. Hopefully, no blood diamonds from impoverished African nations were used on it.
2. Diamond Christmas Cake – $1.7 million
Christmas will always bring you the usual gifts of cookies and fruitcakes. Fruitcakes have become so common that people has been recycling it as a gift. One particular fruitcake, however, would definitely not be re-gifted. Would you, if there are 223 small diamonds encrusted on the outside of the cake? A Japanese pastry chef in Tokyo created this cake. It had six sides and a couple of layers, and took all of six months just to design the cake. The baking process itself lasted just one month. It was sold in 2005.
3. Strawberries Arnaud – $1.4 million
At first glance, you may be bewildered by the hefty price tag of a simple-looking bowl of strawberries topped with mint and cream. Created by Arnaud’s Restaurant in New Orleans, this dessert is far from simple, however. For starters, the strawberries had been pre-soaked in wine. And to finish it off, included in the bowl is a 4.71 carat purple pink diamond, 79 carats of white diamonds, and an 18 karat rose gold.
4. Platinum Cake – $130,000
Rinko Ki Kuchi failed to win an Oscar for her breakthrough performance in the 2006 movie Babel. She did get an honor though, along with Chei Kumazawa, from a Japanese pastry chef who created a platinum cake in honor of the two Japanese actresses. The white cake was laced with necklaces, foils and pendants – all made of platinum. Aside from promoting platinum jewelry, the cake was intended to promote the two actresses’ simple beauty.
5. Twins Ice Cream Sundae from Kilimanjaro – $60,000
Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is famous for the ice fields adorning its peak. Unfortunately, the ice is melting and may disappear within the decade. No, the ice cream sundae from Twins is not to be blamed, as global warming is the real culprit. So if you intend to buy the Twins’ ice cream sundae made of Kilimanjaro’s glacial ice, prepare to spend, as the offer may not last long. The price may be hefty, but the serving is unlimited. It also includes a first class ticket to Tanzania, a guided tour, and a shirt. It is indeed more than just a dessert.
6. Chocolate Pudding – $34,000
A typical chocolate pudding will probably cost you $4 to $5. Add some champagne jelly, and it will set you back an additional 30 bucks. Maybe put in some biscuit joconde, as well. The price is still not that bad. If you include, 2 carat white diamonds in the mix, as what Mark Guibert did, then your chocolate pudding will amount to around $34,000.
7. Cannoli – $26,000
This creation by Carey Lennaccaro of Sprinkled with Sugar in Overland Park in Kansas is amazing for the following things: dark chocolate, whipped ricotta cheese, candied lemon, chocolate and lemon peel. Put them all together and you’ve got an incredible cannoli. And it gets even more amazing and incredible if the cannoli is similar to the exclusive one that features an expensive Italian diamond necklace.
8. Frrrozen Haute Chocolate – $25,000
The Knipschildt Chocolatier shop in Connecticut is known for its expensive chocolates, with some costing around $2,600. Imagine how much a dessert will cost if it is just one of the ingredients. This dessert includes only the finest cocoa, an edible gold foil and truffle shavings. Served in a golden goblet and sprinkled with gold dust, it also includes some edible 23-carat gold and a bracelet made up of one carat of white diamonds and 18 carat of, you guess it, gold! Oh, it has whipped cream on top.
9. Fortress Stilt Fisherman Indulgence – $14,500
This is an Italian cassata with a champagne base from The Fortress, a Sri Lankan hotel. It has a gold leaf and Irish cream, and is served with mango and pomegranate. It also has a handmade stilt made of chocolate, containing an aquamarine stone weighing 80 carats.
10. Golden Opulence – $1,000
A sundae with five scoops of Tahitian vanilla ice cream is already good enough for most people. Serendipity 3 in New York, however, thought it would be better if you mix in Madagascar vanilla beans, Amedei Porceleana (the most expensive cocoa), and rare Venezuelan Chuao chocolate. You also get candied fruits from Paris and a spoon of caviar, along with a crystal goblet from Baccarat Harcourt.
